Introduction to Semantics: Exploring The Natures and Constructions of Meaning

What is meaning? Where does it come from? Is it static or changable? and many other related questions have been questioned since Socratic era. Even, modern language philosophers from Bertrand Russell to John L. Saeed are interested in the nature of meaning. Their interest is quite reasonable as meaning is so fundamental aspect of human’s language that lay people often take such issue for granted. Nonetheless, if they sit and think about it for a moment, they would be surprised at how much they still have not understood about many aspects of meanings.
This book introduces the concepts of meaning to beginning language learners and teachers. It presents how meaning is built, starting from word meaning to sentence meaning. This book also shows how meaning is not static, yet it is a result of social construction. This view makes a word or an utterance can be understood differently. Moreover, some fundamental concepts such as synonymy, antonymy, deixis, and others are also presented. These concepts have long been thought of being well established, yet adopting Saeed’s thought, this book shows how they still have problems of ambiguity, leading to their reconceptualizations. For clarity, this book does not offer new concepts of those themes, yet it raises readers’ awareness of the unfinishedness of those concepts, encouraging young Semanticists to conduct further studies.
Finally, this book gives practical issues of meaning and many real relevant examples. Practical sides of meaning are mirrorred in the discussion of how the language is used for real action in the world. Language can cause something to get done. Besides, language can be used to analyze the politeness system across languages, clearly proving the particularity of language. Finally, this book helps readers, even beginners, understand its contents by giving many real examples to make one concept clear and relevant with reality.
