This textbook, “Strategies for Managing Multi-Hazard Disasters for Anesthesiologists and Intensivists” was developed to respond to an important gap in medical literature, especially for clinicians working in developing countries. Disasters are becoming more frequent and more complex, particularly when several hazards interact and produce cascading effects. These situations require competencies that go beyond routine clinical practice.

Anesthesiologists and intensivists have a central role in disaster response because they are often responsible for managing the most critically ill patients in environments where resources, infrastructure, and personnel may be severely limited. This book offers a practical and foundational framework for these specialists by combining key principles of disaster management with the clinical realities of critical care in austere and resource-constrained settings.

The content is contextualized for challenges commonly encountered in regions such as Indonesia, with particular attention to West Sumatra, an area exposed to both geological and hydrometeorological hazards. By focusing on realistic scenarios and practical strategies, this textbook aims to strengthen clinicians’ ability to provide lifesaving care when normal systems are disrupted, infrastructure is damaged, and standard medical resources are no longer fully available.
